Biography of William H. Janes

Bill Janes is the Director of the Florida Office of Drug Control.  Appointed by the Governor, he is responsible for the coordination of all state efforts to decrease drug abuse and its consequences in Florida.

From 1992-2002, he was a counselor, manager, and executive director for the Drug Abuse Comprehensive Coordinating Office (DACCO) in Tampa.   DACCO’s comprehensive programs provide prevention, intervention, and treatment programs for youth and adults.   He helped form one of the first substance abuse and mental health collaborations in Florida, the Central Florida Behavioral Health Network. 

From 2002-2006, he served as the Director, National Terrorism Preparedness Institute at St Petersburg College.    As NTPI Director, he was responsible for the development of homeland security and homeland defense training products for the Department of Defense and the Department of Homeland Security-Office for Domestic Preparedness. 

He graduated from the Ohio State University with a Bachelor of Arts Degree in History.  He has masters degrees from McNeese State University, the Ohio State University, and the Command and General Staff College at Fort Leavenworth, Kansas.  He served a full career in the US Army and retired as a Colonel of Armor.  He has held a number of key assignments including command through the brigade level; senior armor trainer at the National Training Center in Fort Irwin, California; and Director, School of Advanced Military Studies (SAMS).  He is a graduate of the Command and General Staff College and a War College Fellow. 

He has been married for 38 years and has two children and two grandchildren.
