Dear Floridians Against Methamphetamine in our State,
Welcome to our stop meth in Florida website. This website provides information about our efforts to stop the spread of methamphetamines. This website encourages our state and local officials to forge a coordinated response. We also want this dialogue to reach our citizens and families. Too often, we fail to carry this education “into the living room”. With your help, we can educate Floridians regarding the devastation this horrific drug has caused across America and what we can do to stop it in our great State. To assist you in starting a dialogue, the Florida Methamphetamine Task Force has created a Meth Prevention (Stop Meth) Toolkit that can be downloaded and adapted to fit your needs to inform your local community.
We have a strong Drug Control Strategy that provides strategic direction for our efforts. It emphasizes collaboration among the law enforcement, prevention and treatment communities. We have also completed the revision of the Florida Methamphetamine Control Strategy and posted it on this website. I appreciate the efforts of the workgroups in our State Methamphetamine Task Force for their contributions to make this Meth strategy a superb tool for combating the effects of methamphetamines.
We also have important ongoing initiatives across our state. The Drug Endangered Children Committee has been doing terrific work for years. Our law enforcement partners are achieving remarkable results in reducing clandestine laboratories. Ultimately, there is nothing more important than the community effort to stop methamphetamines. Mothers Against Methamphetamine is a grassroots, faith-based initiative in Polk County, Miami’s South Florida Methamphetamine Task Force has developed a strategy, and Orlando has completed a community study with strong educational and follow-up recommendations. There are many other communities who are using coalitions, providers, and local officials to educate our citizens to the dangers of Meth. If your community is not aware of these initiatives and wants to learn more, contact my office and we will link you to these projects.
We know that to successfully fight substance abuse, each community must complete a needs assessment, develop strong community capacity, write a strategy that outlines measurable objectives and provides for comprehensive involvement by community leaders both public and private, implement that strategy, and then conduct ongoing evaluation for revision and sustainment of the community effort. Substance abuse is a community problem that requires coordinated regional, state, and federal support. The challenge is formidable; but our capacity to respond is strong whether the problem is methamphetamine, cocaine, heroin, marijuana, prescription drugs, or some other harmful substance that destroys individuals, families, and communities.
Thank you for visiting this website. Please be an active participant in our effort to stop Meth in Florida. I welcome your comments and suggestions.
